Wheelchair and Hy-Tek Options:
  1. Managers have the option to either add the wheelchair athletes to a heat of the regular races or create separate events;
    1. See Runners and Wheelers and Meet Directors Check List for details.
    2. Basically, if there are two or more wheelers at the same event, the wheelers are to race against other wheelers in their respective events.
    3. If, however, there is only one wheeler at a given meet/event, there is a difference of opinion as to what is required under the law.
      • 1.)There is nothing in the NFHS Track and Field Rule Book or the OHSAA Track and Field Sport Regulations that prohibits wheelers from racing at the same time as runners; statistically, runners will race faster than wheelers in shorter distances but as the distances increase, the wheelers will outrace the runners; 3.) that with respect to safety issues, races run in lanes lend themselves to being safer conditions in which to race than races where lane assignments are eliminated after a certain distance; 4.) the number of lanes to a track and the width of the lanes on the track may also affect your safety analysis about runners and wheelers racing at the same time, and 5.) the experience and skill level of the wheeler may also affect your safety analysis. Also keep in mind, the race chair does not have a braking mechanism so that even in the 100-meter race, ample distance must be allowed for the slowing/stoppingof the chair.
    4. For scoring, when there are two or more wheelers in the event, the wheeler's results should be scored just as with any other event competed during that meet. However, if there is only only one, the schools simply agree not to score these solo competitor events in the team totals.
  2. To add wheelers to the regular events:
    1. Saftey is the major concern.
    2. Add the wheeler to a lane and if possible, leave one lane clear between wheeler and footed athletes.
    3. In Hy-Tek, seed events as usual.
      1. Assign the athlete to a heat/race.
      2. Record the results as Exhibition
  3. To create separate events in Hy-Tek:
    1. See Event Parameters below.
    2. See 100 Meters Wheelchair screen shot
  4. If there are questions:

Event Parameters - Hy-Tek Setup Screen:
  • Meets with Wheelchair Events
    • For the four OHSAA wheelchair events, you will need to setup the events in Hy-Tek prior to import.
      • The setup is similar to standard events, but to avoid import into the regular events the distances or event names must be unique!
      • In Hy-Tek Meet Manager, Version 4.0Bj or later, there is a choice to include the word Wheelchair with the event name without having to use the event note. (See 100 Meters Wheelchair screen shot below.)
        • For Distance, select Custom and Event Class, select Wheelchair.
      • For Hy-Tek 3.0 or 2.0, use Custom distances and in the Event Note to add the word Wheelchair.
    • For Semi-Colon Delimited Import the wheelchair races are temporarily defaulted to 2 meters longer and the shot put is named Weight Throw.
      • The 100 Meters Wheelchair is defaulted to 102, the 400 Meters Wheelchair to 402, and the 800 Meters Wheelchair to 802.
        • Import the data first, then change the distances back to your actual distances.
      • The ShotPut Wheelchair is temproarily named Weight Throw.
        • After import change the name back to Shot Put Wheelchair using either the Event Class or Event Note.
